Lorry Loader (HIAB) - Operator Training

Background: Lorry loader (HIAB) operator training is a specialist skill often sought after in logistic companies involved with the construction industry. The lorry loader / HIAB course will vary in duration depending on the requirement of the company or individual.

Big Wheelers (South West) are able to provide experienced qualified lorry loader instructors who are accredited to The Association of Lorry Loader Manufactures and Importers (ALLMI) Training Limited.

ALLMI Training Limited specialises in lorry loaders / HIAB’s, because of this it delivers the highest set of training standards in the UK within this specialist area. ALLMI training is the only lorry loader training scheme in the UK to have been awarded the Health and Safety Executive's ( HSE ) ‘Working in Partnership' logo and commendation.

For Company drivers on-site lorry loader / HIAB training is offered throughout the South West Region at local company premises using your own lorry loader equipment.  Alternatively for private individuals lorry loader / HIAB training can also be arranged using our vehicles and lorry loaders at our Head Office in Cardiff.   At present we use an ATLAS 140.1 with a hook and also a HIAB 090 with a brickgrab attachment.

Theory & Practical Training: The lorry loader operator training course consists of 15 modules and culminates in both written and practical assessments. All successful operators are issued with an ALLMI operator's manual, a certificate and identity card, and will be registered on the ALLMI operator database.

The lorry loader operators licence is valid for five years, after which time refresher training will need to be undertaken. The certificate and identity card will specify the ALLMI category for which the operator is licensed. The category system is based on the rated capacity of the lorry loader and the attachment used during training.

Dress & Equipment: For the practical training you are to provide your own safety boots/shoes to include ‘toe tectors' (steel toe cap footwear). Big Wheelers (South West) will NOT accept any responsibility should you injure your foot/feet as a result of inadequate footwear.  You will be provided with hard-hats, high visibility vests and gloves.

Please do not worry if you have not yet passed your LGV driving test. There is no legal requirement to hold a LGV licence if you are only operating the lorry loader. Your instructor will familiarise you with the cab controls in relation to the operation of the equipment.

How to book a course: At present this training course has been temporarily suspended. The course will become available again in November 2013. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

“The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) commends the use of this Training Programme to those who have duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. This programme was drawn up with the participation of a HSE representative and will be referred to in relevant HSE publications”.
