Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Category C+E (Old HGV Class 1)

LGV Category C+E Driving Licence: The first step is to ensure you have a full LGV category C driving licence with a provisional entitlement in order to learn to drive an LGV category C+E vehicle.

Theory Test: There is no theory test for licence category C+E.

LGV C+E Practical Driving Assessment: You may wish to attend a free one hour driving assessment. For this you need to produce your driving licence with a full LGV C entitlement and hold a valid provisional LGV C+E entitlement.

The assessment will consist of a brief demonstration drive by the instructor, followed by you driving on-road in various traffic situations and completing an off-road reversing exercise.

After the assessment drive the instructor can advise as to how many training days are needed in order to reach test standard.

On average most LGV C drivers require five days (20 hours) LGV category C+E training in order to reach test standard. If you already have experience in reversing articulated trailers the course could be reduced to just three or four days (12 to 16 hours).

To book an assessment drive, please call Big Wheelers at your convenience.

LGV C+E Practical Driver Training & Test: A normal training day will consist of 4 hours of “one to one” tuition. In general there is a morning session from 8am to midday, followed by an afternoon period from midday to 4pm, however timings may be adjusted to suit customer needs and the time of the DVSA practical test.

The practical training course will cover all aspects required by the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Syllabus. Items covered will include vehicle safety check questions, driving on urban & rural roads, dual carriageways & motorways, also a specific off-road reversing exercise and uncoupling and recoupling of the trailer.

Under normal circumstances your LGV C+E practical test is always taken in the last hour on the final day of your chosen course.

Big Wheelers (South West) are registered with the DVSA as a training provider and are able to book LGV practical driving tests up to ten weeks in advance. This allows us a great deal of flexibility to arrange a course and test to suit your personal commitments.
